This is a great way to deal with the homesick campers. What you do is tell the campers that it is fine and normal to be homesick. The typical way of dealing with it is to get the campers involved in something. The campers get homesick when they can think about and remember their family so if you get their minds off of that, it usually works. However at bed time it is very hard to get them involved in something so you give them a homesick pill. This is a very special pill that has the power to take home sickness away. You give it to the camper and in minutes the crying will stop and they will go to sleep.

One way to make camp fun is to have like a camp spirit day or few days at camp, where you have a theme and all the campers and staff must reflect the theme. So theme ideas are:
-______(color) day
-backwards day (walk backwards and wear your clothes backwards)
-quiet day
-fast day
-reverse day (run the schedule in reverse)
-etc (anything you want)

A fun way to introduce the staff is to write a spontaneous melodrama. If you do not know what that is, it is a drama that a narrator reads as the staff act and say whatever the narrator says. It can be about anything. Inspiration can come from movies, cartoons, TV shows, get stuff from the internet, anything. It should be about 5-10 minutes and you do it at the first chapel or meal, which ever one suits the camp situation best.

With my father being on the YS team I have been exposed to many great resources. One that I have used a few times when I have been in a bind is the Ideas CD. This is a CD that they have made based on the multi-volume Ideas series books. This is great. You can search for anything. It is full of great ideas from different games, to bible studies, to mixers to anything a youth pastor could use. It is all written for a youth pastor but with some imagination and creativity it can easy be made usable for a camp. The program director can use it for games and the counselors can get bible study ideas and anything else you can think of.

One way that you can motivate that campers to try to be clean and good is to keep score. One thing to remember when you when you are keeping score either it be a thermometer that is getting higher and higher or a rope that they are trying to get to a goal, is always remember that “0’s” are free. What that means is that if campers are trying to get 10 points over the week is not near as fun as trying to get 1,000,000,000 points and they get 100,000,000 points for clean cabins instead of 1 point. In summery more “0’s” = more fun (to an extent)
